Every year in Term 3, Willoughby Girls High School students in Years 7, 8,9 and 10 are required to select subjects to study for their next one or two years. At the time, information is provided to students and parents to assist them to make the most appropriate choices.
In Term 3, Year 7 students choose a language to study in Year 8:
French or Japanese.

In Term 3, Year 8 students choose three elective subjects to study in Years 9 and 10. Subjects offered include*:

- Food Technology,
- History Elective
- Information & Software Technology
- Physical Activity & Sport Studies (PASS)
- Photographic & Digital Media
- Textiles Technology
- Visual Arts
- Visual Design
In Term 3, Students choose to discontinue one of their three elective subjects in Year 10. This is replaced by a project based course, Major Works.
In Term 3, Students choose 12 units of subjects to study in Year 11 and 12 for the HSC. This is done in consultation with teachers and the Careers Advisor. Willoughby Girls High School organises a Subject Selection Week where students and parents are given lots of information about each subject, and they also have the opportunity to be part of a Careers Google Class Room. *Willoughby Girls High School makes every effort to enable students to study the courses they would like. In the rare instance there is not enough demand for a course or for some other reason the subject selection cannot be accommodated, a student will be asked make another choice.
Students who start at the school after the subject selections have taken place will be given a choice of subjects from lines on their Year group’s timetable.
