Community involvement

Our school values strong partnerships with our families and community. Parents and carers can get involved through our Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) or by volunteering at our school. Your time and support help make our school a better place for everyone. Contact us to see how you can get involved.

Parents and Citizens Association (P&C)

At Willoughby Girls High School, parents are integral to the achievement of all students. Our active Parents & Citizens (P&C) Committee provides funds for school-wide projects such as technology resources, classroom and facilities enhancements, additional teaching and learning resources, as well as managing the extra-curricular music and sports programs. Together, parents, teachers and students collaborate to ensure the best social, emotional and academic outcomes for all students.

We are proud to offer a range of external sporting clubs. Girls can play Netball, Basketball, Hockey, Soccer and Touch football outside school hours. Additionally, the P&C is committed to supporting new clubs where there is sufficient interest. All these clubs are run by parent volunteers.

Parents also play an active role in supporting our high-quality Music Ensembles program, complementing the many opportunities offered through the school Music Department. Over the past twenty years the program has expanded significantly, now including a Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, String Orchestra, Accelerate Ensemble (for beginners), two Vocal Ensembles and a Combined Choir.

2025 P&C Meetings

The Willoughby Girls High School Parents and Citizens' Association (P&C) meet twice per term. All parents are welcome and encouraged to attend. We regularly host informative speakers and events at meetings that are publicised via the school newsletter, emails and parents' Facebook page.

Term 1
11th of February
18th of March
Term 2
13th May
17th of June
Term 3
5th of  August
9th of  September
Term 4
28th of October
2nd of December

The P&C meetings provide parents with the opportunity to meet regularly with the school Principal and Deputy Principals and hear what is happening in the school. These meetings provide an informal forum to raise and discuss relevant educational and welfare issues and any additional funding around the school. In 2025 the P&C trialled virtual meetings on two occasions to enable more parents the ability to engage directly with the school.

For news about P&C meetings and sports/music sub-committees, please go to  Willoughby Girls High School facebook page  and follow our page. This page is managed and administered exclusively by the P&C Executive and sub-committees with permission from the school. The Netball Club has a separate facebook which is administered by the Netball sub-committee.

2025 P&C committee members

Throughout the year we actively welcome new committee members, especially parents of Year 7s who have recently joined the school and are interested in getting involved in the P&C.

Please contact us at  secretary@wghspandc.org.au  if you have any questions.

Voluntary contributions to the P&C

P&C funding is largely provided by parents through voluntary contributions.

For 2025 these contributions are $200 (General Fund) and $160 (tax-deductible Building Fund).

Donations to the P&C General and Building Funds are used to provide facilities, equipment, resources and technology to enhance the girls’ learning experiences. The Committee also help to connect with the wider community and supplement funding through grants and sponsorship. The tax-deductible P&C building fund contributes to any permanent fixtures, fittings or building works not considered essential by the Department of Education.

Examples of P&C funded projects in the past couple of years include:

P&C Music Ensembles

It doesn’t matter who you are or what your musical background is, everyone is welcome in the WGHS Music Program. Every year our groups perform at school and at great venues around Sydney, including the Town Hall and the Opera House. Regional and overseas tours are also scheduled every two years!

Supported by the P&C, the Ensembles Program offers four instrumental ensembles directed by professional conductors – for one annual flat fee, girls in Years 7- 12 can play anything from cello to trombone in as MANY ensembles as they wish (see entry requirements).

And if singing is your thing, the school runs fantastic ensembles for you too!

There’s something for everyone!

Ensemble Entry Requirements
  1. Accelerate Ensemble is for those who are either brand NEW to playing OR would like to play a NEW instrument in high school. This ensemble prepares girls to join our other ensembles. Accelerate is particularly looking for girls interested in learning a new, ‘targeted’ instrument (see Accelerate Scholarships information below).
  2. Concert Band is open to anyone who plays a band instrument (woodwind, brass or percussion). If you enjoyed band in primary school, you’re going to love the fun of playing in the Concert Band.
  3. Symphonic Wind Ensemble (SWE) is for more experienced wind and brass players. Entry is by audition twice each year. The majority of SWE players are in Year 9 or above.
  4. String Orchestra is open to any student in Years 7-12 who has learned a string instrument for at least a year.
Vocal Ensemble

The school Music Faculty runs vocal groups each year, which require a very minimal financial commitment. These groups perform at school events and at other great venues around Sydney.

Combined Choir – Years 7-10, no audition necessary
Junior Vocal Ensemble – Years 7-9, by audition (starts in Term 2)

Senior Vocal Ensemble – Years 10-12, by audition

Accelerate Instrument Scholarships
WGHS is proud of this program which encourages girls to try out a new instrument. Hire scholarships are available for ‘targeted’ instruments, covering the hire cost of the instrument for the first two years. This is a great opportunity for girls who wish to challenge themselves with a new instrument in high school.
WGHS Music Subcommittee

This volunteer group is made up entirely of enthusiastic parents, keen to see their daughters enjoy music and ensure the continued success of the WGHS ensembles program. We work closely with the conductors and WGHS staff Mr Francesco Maltese, Mr Clem Burgmann and Ms Caroline Jarvis to guarantee a fun, fulfilling and well- run music program. Each ensemble has a parent coordinator who is the liaison between conductors and the girls/parents.

NEW parents welcome. It doesn’t matter what skills you have – accounting, fundraising, baking, transporting instruments, or just plain enthusiasm – whatever you are prepared to offer, you’ll be warmly welcomed! The Music program provides many opportunities for parent involvement, we always need armies of helpers for sausage sizzling, baking, selling raffle tickets – you name it – come along and join the fun!

WGHS Music Subcommittee meets each term (Monday evening of Week 2) and is joined by the conductors and teachers. Please contact the Convenor if you are interested in joining the subcommittee.

Fees

One ANNUAL flat membership fee of $800 is paid to the P&C Music Committee (NOT the school). This fee covers your daughter’s involvement in ANY or ALL instrumental ensembles – we only collect extra money during the year for optional events like an overnight tour. The membership fee covers payment of conductors’ fees, purchase of sheet music, an annual ensemble Weekend Workshop, buses where required and much more!

INSTRUMENT HIRE: It is expected that most girls will provide their own instruments. Certain instruments may be available for hire, subject to availability. Students in the Accelerate Ensemble have priority access to instruments.

INSTRUMENTAL TUTORS: The school provides space for professional tutors to teach our students on site after school. These tutors are NOT employed by the school, but we will provide their contact details to parents who would like after-school tutoring for their daughter. The list of tutors (and instruments) changes from year to year, so please contact the Music Faculty if you would like more information before February.

Band Tours

International, regional and local – WGHS is always going places! Each alternate year we plan a tour, either regional or international. The other year sees interested players contribute to the School Musical. In 2014 WGHS debuted its International Music Tour program in Hong Kong. In 2016, 58 girls toured California USA, visiting schools and colleges from San Francisco to LA, performing at exciting venues such as Disneyland! In 2024 they spent a wonderful week in the Gold Coast and Brisbane, and planning is underway for a tour in late 2026 - further details in early 2026.

YEAR-ROUND CALENDAR: Our WGHS musicians are kept busy all year round with plenty of gigs, from festivals to band competitions to workshops! Rehearsals start in the second week of the school year, followed by the all-day Intensive Workshops which take place on a Sunday early in Term 1. Each Ensemble has a number of performances throughout the year, including at the Sydney Opera House, Town Hall, Chatswood Concourse and Chatswood RSL, and at community events, such as Willoughby Spring Festival and the Northbridge Fireworks. Band competitions are held during Term 3 at UNSW and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Get Involved

We offer comprehensive umpiring and coaching programs. These initiatives allow players to explore other roles within the sport, helping them develop both as leaders and mentors.

Our Club also offers parents the chance to get involved, connect with one another, and engage in their daughters’ sporting activities.

Volunteers Required Our Club has been running since 2001, and at the end of 2025, some current Sub-Committee members will be stepping down as their daughters finish at the school. To ensure the continued success of our Club, we need new volunteers to step in and join the Sub-Committee. There are many small volunteer roles available, some of which don’t require netball knowledge or attendance at games. What matters most is a willingness to contribute and be part of our thriving netball community.

We are also looking to recruit a paid Club Administrator as soon as possible.

If you’d like to know more about any of the roles available or discuss how you can help to ensure the Club’s ongoing success, please contact us - we’d love to hear from you.
