Sport
Sport and physical activity are a vital part of the Willoughby Girls High School experience. Participating in sport not only builds self-confidence, fosters communication and teamwork skills, and develops leadership qualities, but it also positively impacts students’ physical, social, and mental well-being. At Willoughby Girls High School, we recognise the importance of encouraging girls to actively participate in sport, empowering them to challenge barriers and embrace their strengths. Through diverse sporting opportunities, we aim to foster a lifelong passion for physical activity, helping our students maintain healthy and active lifestyles well beyond their school years.
Grade and Recreational Sport
Grade and Rec Sport are conducted weekly on Wednesday afternoons from 1:40pm-3:00pm for students in Years 9-11.
Students, depending on their interests, will choose either a Grade or a Recreational sport each term, depending on venue availability and program scope.
Grade Sports
Grade Sports at Willoughby Girls High School are competitively structured, with students trialing for their chosen teams at the start of each season (running over Term 2 and 3). Those selected will represent WGHS in weekly competitive matches against other schools within the Northern Beaches Zone Competition. Our teams have achieved championship titles in various sports, and we are always eager to identify and train new players. The zone offers a wide variety of sports, including basketball, netball, soccer, touch football and volleyball.
Recreation Sports
Recreational Sports at Willoughby Girls High School are designed for students who prefer a more relaxed, non-competitive environment to stay active and have fun. Our diverse program offers a wide range of enjoyable activities such as tennis, table tennis, bowling, rock climbing, dance, basketball, gym fitness, badminton, martial arts, fitness training, ice skating, and yoga. These options encourage students to engage in physical activity at their own pace, promoting overall well-being, social connection, and a lifelong love of health and fitness beyond the competitive arena.
Sport Selection
At Willoughby Girls High School, students can choose their sports each season through our online selection system. Selections are run at the beginning of each sporting season and will be communicated via email and Sentral.
School carnivals
Willoughby Girls High School hosts three major sports carnivals each year: Swimming, Cross Country, and Athletics. Attendance is compulsory for all students, who are encouraged to take part in every carnival to demonstrate their house spirit. Our skilled athletes also have the chance to progress and compete in the Northern Beaches Zone Carnivals.
OUR SPORT HOUSES:
Knock Out Sports
Each year, Willoughby Girls High School enters multiple knockout sports teams in the Sydney North competition. Students can trial for a variety of teams and, if selected, are expected to demonstrate commitment and teamwork through regular training sessions. The knockout sports offered at WGHS include basketball, table tennis, football (soccer), netball, touch football, tennis, and volleyball.
Sydney North Representative Sport
For students who excel in sport, there is the opportunity to trial for selection in the Sydney North Representative Teams. Throughout the year, trials are held for various sports, giving our students the chance to showcase their skills and earn a place on these prestigious teams. Being selected to represent Sydney North is both an honour and a significant achievement, reflecting outstanding dedication and talent. Students who are interested in trialling for these opportunities are encouraged to see the PDHPE staff at the beginning of the year.
Year 7 Gala Day
Each year, our Year 7 students have the chance to participate in sporting gala days, competing against other schools in our zone in their chosen sports. During these events, Year 9 and 10 PASS students support the teams by taking on coaching and management roles, providing valuable leadership and guidance.
Year 7 - 8 Sport
At WGHS, Year 7-8 Sport is integrated, as it is run within the PDHPE periods. Students have the opportunity to trial fitness, as well as a vast range of sports within these periods.
