High potential and gifted education
At Willoughby Girls High School we celebrate diversity and see every learner’s potential as our priority. Many of our students have an array of talents and we will partner with them and their families to maximise them. We are also committed to ensuring equitable access to high potential and gifted education (HPGE) for those students who demonstrate high potential or giftedness in the domains identified by the Department of Education: creative, intellectual, physical and social-emotional.
Students identified as suitable for the HPGE class will engage with a differentiated curriculum for those courses. This may include adjustments to the teaching and learning sequence, differentiated assessment tasks, enrichment of classroom activities, engagement with the broader community etc.
We recognise that, like all students, our HPGE learners will require appropriate supports to assist them in their learning. In addition to the school-wide support services, HPGE students are provided with opportunities throughout the academic year to reflect on their learning and to explore opportunities for further adjustments, as agents of their own learning.
In Year 7, students enrolled in WGHS who wish to be considered for the HPGE class for Core subjects (comprising English, History, Mathematics, Music, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education and Science) are invited to submit an application and undertake external numeracy and literacy testing.
In Years 8-10:
- One HPGE English class will be determined based on a combination of academic merit and teacher professional judgement.
- One HPGE Mathematics class will be determined based on a combination of academic merit and teacher professional judgement.
- One ability-grouped Core class (comprising Geography/History, Music, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education and Science) will be determined based on a combination of academic merit and teacher professional judgement.
