Dance
At Willoughby Girls High School, dance is celebrated. Students are encouraged to explore their creativity, discover new styles, and push artistic boundaries through movement. Dance develops important life skills such as self-assurance, teamwork, and adaptability, while also supporting physical, social, and emotional wellbeing.
Our students have access to a range of opportunities to perform on and off stage, allowing them to showcase their talents and share their passion for dance with the school community. Students can also choose to study dance as an elective subject, gaining a deeper understanding of choreography, performance, and dance theory. By fostering a supportive environment for creative exploration and performance, Willoughby Girls High School inspires students to embrace their individuality and develop a lifelong love for dance that extends well beyond their school years.
Elective Dance
In Years 9 and 10, students have the opportunity to study dance as an elective subject, where they deepen their understanding of performance, composition, and dance appreciation. This course allows students to explore various dance styles and techniques while developing skills in choreography and expressive movement. Through practical performance experiences and theoretical study, students learn to analyse and appreciate dance as an art form. The elective provides a comprehensive foundation that nurtures creativity, technical ability, and critical thinking, as well as preparing students for any further dance study they may wish to undertake.
Dance Ensembles
Our auditioned dance ensemble groups provide students with opportunities to perform across a variety of styles on stage. Members are required to learn at least two routines: a contemporary/lyrical piece submitted to the Sydney North Dance Festival and other performance events, and a second routine that incorporates a mix of styles such as modern, jazz, musical theatre, and hip-hop. Commitment to choreography learning, rehearsals, and performing confidently before an audience is essential. Company dancers may also be invited to take on leadership roles, assisting with open dance clubs and choreography throughout the year.
Dance Clubs
Willoughby Girls High School offers open dance clubs that welcome all students, regardless of experience or skill level. These clubs are student-led, providing opportunities for students to develop leadership and teaching skills as they guide their peers through exciting routines. A range of styles are covered, including K-Pop, Hip-Hop/JFH, and contemporary, allowing students to explore various styles of dance in a fun and supportive environment. Participants are provided with the option to perform on stage in our school showcases if they wish. Open dance clubs are a fantastic way for students to connect, learn new moves, and share their love of dance.
Dance Showcases
Each year, Willoughby Girls High School hosts our Winter and Summer Dance Showcase that celebrates the achievements of our students in dance. These events feature performances from students involved in our dance program, including numbers from our open dance clubs, dance ensembles and students who have received outstanding results in their Dance studies. The showcase is a wonderful opportunity for students to share their passion for dance with family and friends.
